The origin of the name ”PUK”
Puppet Theatre PUK was founded in 1929.
The original name of our company at the time of its founding was ”Puppet Club.”
In the 1920s, when Puppet Club was established,the First World War, which had involved all of Europe, had just ended. The various movements for peace emerged out of the desire to prevent another war.
Some examples include the ”Defense of Peace” movement led by figures such as Romain Rolland and Frédéric Joliot-Curie, and the ”Wander Vogel” movement among the youth of Central Europe. One of the key movements was the Esperanto movement, founded by Zamenhof, who believed that linguistic differences created barriers to communication, which in turn could lead to war. Esperanto, which means ”one who hopes”, became an international common language in this movement.
The young people who founded PUK were also interested in the Esperanto movement. Therefore, they named their Puppet Club ”LA PUPA KLUBO”” in Esperanto as its official name. Among themselves, they shortened it to PUK, derived from PUPA (meaning ”puppet”) and KLUBO (meaning ”club”). Over time, the abbreviation ”PUK” became the common name for the group.
After World War II, in November 1946, when the theatre company was rebuilt, the official name was changed to ”Puppet Theatre PUK.”

Puppet Theatre PUK is composed of three sections.
舞台活動を中心とする劇団プークと人形劇場の事業、管理ならびに附属アカデミーの運営などを行なうプーク人形劇場、そしてテレビ、映画など映像の製作にあたるスタジオ・ノーヴァの三つの部門で構成され、それぞれが独立した法人経営体として独自に運営しています。
